First Mile Communications brings wireless connectivity to Terremark’s NAP of the Americas®
Agreement offers area businesses a secure, scalable, high-speed alternative.
ATLANTA – July 22, 2008 – First Mile Communications, a provider of high-speed Internet access, and Terremark Worldwide, Inc. (NASDQ: TMRK), a leading supplier of managed infrastructure IT services, today announced that First Mile will offer high-capacity wireless Internet service from Terremark’s flagship facility, the NAP of the Americas® in Miami. This marks First Mile’s expansion into the Miami market.
Beginning today, First Mile will offer fast, secure, always-on wireless Internet services to some 4,500 businesses in metropolitan Miami from the NAP of the Americas, a unique facility that provides direct backbone access to more than 160 of the world’s major carriers. In addition, enterprise, government and carrier customers with facilities at the NAP can take advantage of First Mile’s economical and diverse last-mile connectivity from there to other locations as a primary or backup route. At the NAP, First Mile interconnects with multiple Tier-1 ISPs for direct access to the Internet.
“We decided to locate at the NAP because it is truly one of the preeminent carrier collocation and peering sites in the world,” said R. Stanley Allen, president of First Mile. “Having access to many Tier-1 ISPs, redundant power systems, and state-of-the-art security are all important factors in hub site selection for us and our customers; we need a facility that supports our ‘always-on’ guarantee to our customers. We are thrilled to begin serving customers in Miami from this world-class vantage point.”
First Mile will use the roof of the NAP to locate multiple antennas that are capable of high-capacity, secure wireless links over FCC-licensed spectrum. At the same time, the company will locate receive sites on Class-A commercial office buildings such as Wachovia Plaza, Miami Center and 444 Brickell, where First Mile’s customers reside. The company will also offer high-capacity links to enterprise, government and carrier customers at the NAP for connections to their home offices, remote data centers or customer sites. The wireless nature of these links makes them an ideal alternative to land lines for disaster recovery and business continuity planning, a priority in this market.
“We are delighted to have First Mile as a tenant and service provider at the NAP,” said Marvin Wheeler, president of Terremark’s U.S. Commercial Business Unit. “This unique offering provides a wireless alternative guaranteeing ‘true-path diversity’ to our tenants, particularly in light of disaster recovery planning.”
